Men's Lacrosse Tabbed Fourth In 2012 NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team has been selected to finish fourth in the 2012 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced by the league office on Thursday night. The NEC coaches collectively picked Mount St. Mary's as the favorite to win the conference championship, as the Mountaineers garnered four first-place votes.
For the second consecutive season, Bryant was slated in the No. 2 slot, earning the two remaining first-place votes. Robert Morris finished third in the poll, while Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Wagner rounded out the census.
Northeast Conference finalist a year ago, QU (7-7, 4-1 NEC) won five of its last seven games en route to a championship match against Mount St. Mary's. The impressive stint included a double-overtime win over Robert Morris in the semifinals and a nine-goal triumph over the Pioneers on Senior Day.
However, this season's rendition of the Bobcats might have a new look with four of their five All-NEC selections and several other contributors graduating last May. Junior Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas), who played in all 14 games last season and earned All-NEC Second Team accolades, returns as the team's top scorer. He posted 20 goals and six assists for a total of 26 points in 2011.
Quinnipiac opens the 2012 season at Brown on Feb. 26. Opening face-off from the Quinnipiac Field Hockey and Lacrosse Turf Field in Hamden, Conn. is scheduled for 12 p.m.
