Men's Lacrosse Falls At Holy Cross, 17-10WORCESTER, Mass. - Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.) scored three goals to extend his team-leading goal total to 20 and added an assist, but the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team was defeated by Holy Cross, 17-10, Saturday evening on Holy Cross Field. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-5, while the Crusaders improve to 4-9.
Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.) added two goals, while Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, N.Y.), Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) and Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.) had two assists apiece. Kostaras and Michael Bucchino (Nashua, N.H.) added his first career goal, while Kelly, Alex Marotto (South Windsor, Conn.) and Garett Kerr (Caledon, Ontario) also added goals.
Bobby Schnibbe (Duxbury, Mass.) had a stellar game at the face-off x, winning 11-of-17 opportunities. Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) took the loss in net for the Bobcats, allowing 13 goals while making five saves. Jamie Prudden (Andover, Mass.) saw the final 22 minutes in net, allowing four goals while making four saves. Conor Sweeney took the win for the Crusaders, stopping 14 shots while allowing nine.
After the teams exchanged goals in the first eight minutes of the first quarter, the Crusaders ended the half with nine straight goals to take a 10-1 lead into halftime.
Oppenheimer opened the second half with his first goal of the game at the 10:47 mark of the third quarter, but the Crusaders' Colin McGeehin scored what proved to be the game winner just 30 seconds later. The Crusaders' lead swelled to as many as 11 goals, before the Bobcats closed the game with four of the last five goals to close to within the final margin of seven goals.
For the game, the Bobcats outshot the Crusaders, 50-33, and caused 27 Holy Cross turnovers to their own 22. Holy Cross won the ground-ball game, 49-28, and took 16-of-30 face-offs.
The Bobcats return to action next Saturday, when they play host to ECAC foe Bellarmine. Opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
