Toews was selected with the 108th overall pick of the 4th round of the NHL Draft, the second highest pick a Quinnipiac player has been taken at in the program's NCAA Division I history.
Toews saw action in 37 of Quinnipiac's 40 games in 2013-14, totaling a goal and 16 assists for 17 points. The Bobcats' second-highest scoring defenseman, Toews also ranked eighth nationally in freshman defenseman points, and was one of six freshman defenseman in NCAA Division I hockey with 15 or more assists.
