Sam Anas Named College Hockey News Rookie of the Year

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey freshman Sam Anas (Potomac, Md.), fresh off one of the best rookie seasons in program history, added to his collection of hardware on Monday afternoon. Anas was named College Hockey News 2014 Rookie of the Year, which was released by the association's front office.

The accolade is nothing new for Anas, who was named 2014 ECAC Hockey Co-Rookie of the year a few weeks back. Anas was the third Quinnipiac player - joining Bryan Leitch in 2006 and Brandon Wong in 2007 – honored as a recipient of the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year award. He was also named to the ECAC Hockey Third Team as well as the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Anas is one of three 20-goal scorers in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey after tallying 22 on the season. In the process he became just the fifth Quinnipiac freshman in the Division I history to reach the 20-goal mark. He was just the second Quinnipiac freshman – along with Brian Herbert – to register 20 goals and 20 assists in his first season. Furthermore, Anas' 22 goals and 43 points lead all NCAA Division I freshmen and he is the only freshman with 40 points for the year.

Boston College's Ian McCoshen, Colorado College's Jaccob Slavin, and St. Lawrence's Gavin Bayreuther joined Anas as potential candidates for the award. BC goalie Thatcher Demko earned some attention as well, as did forwards JT Compher of Michigan, Hudson Fasching of Minnesota, Mario Puskarich of Vermont and Mike Szmatula of Northeastern.

Quinnipiac finished the season 24-10-6, losing to Providence in the First Round of the NCAA tournament last Friday.

Anas becomes the first forward to win CHN's ROTY since Notre Dame's T.J. Tynan in 2011.
