Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Ranked 6th in USCHO.com Division I Poll on Monday, March 10

The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team is ranked 6th in the latest USCHO.com Division I poll, released on Monday, March 10, 2014. Quinnipiac finished the regular season with a record of 22-8-6 and will be hosting No. 16 Yale (17-9-5) this weekend in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal best-of-three series.

The Bobcats were idle last week for the first time since the week of Jan. 20 as they earned a First Round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Quinnipiac finished their regular season off on a strong note as they earned three points in their longest ECAC Hockey road trip of the season, defeating St. Lawrence, 8-0, and tying Clarkson, 1-1. The No. 3-seeded Bobcats now return home for a conference playoff series against local rival Yale as the No. 6-seed Bulldogs swept No. 11-seed Harvard at home last weekend to advance to the Quarterfinal round.

Quinnipiac is 25-18 all-time in the ECAC Hockey Tournament as the Bobcats advanced to the Semifinals just a year ago. The Bobcats lost to Brown before defeating Yale, 3-0, in the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game which is the only time Quinnipiac and the Bulldogs have met in the ECAC Hockey postseason. Quinnipiac is the only team in the conference to win a postseason series in each year since the Bobcats first joined the league back in 2005-06.

Leading this talented Bobcat squad in scoring is freshman Sam Anas (19-21-40) while senior linemates and twin brothers Kellen (18-21-39) and Connor Jones (13-21-34) help engineer one of the highest-scoring lines in the nation. Meanwhile, junior Matthew Peca (12-22-34), senior Jordan Samuels-Thomas (12-15-27), sophomore Travis St. Denis (12-13-25), and junior Bryce Van Brabant (14-6-20) all have at least 12 goals on the season and make for a dominating offense throughout each line.

Sophomore goalie Michael Garteig has been the anchor of the Bobcats' defense all season as he has started all 36 games in 2013-14 and allowed just 66 goals for the season. He ranks 4th in the nation with a 1.84 GAA, 11th in winning percentage (.694, 22-8-6) and is 2nd with six shutouts. Garteig's six shutouts broke Eric Hartzell's single-season shutout record.

The remainder of the USCHO.com Top 10 list featured little movement as all Top 5 teams held steady at their previous week's ranking while no school left the Top 10 from last week as well. Overall, no team improved or dropped more than one spot from the last poll as postseason play is beginning to ramp up in each conference across the country.

Game one of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal best-of-three series between Quinnipiac and Yale will be held Friday, March 14 at 7:00 pm from the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden. Game two will be held Saturday at 7:00 pm and game three (if-necessary) will take place on Sunday also at 7:00 pm.
