ASIAGO, Italy – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey captured the Challenge Cup Series against Asiago with a 4-0 win in its final competition of its Tour of Italy. Captain Cory Hibbeler led the Bobcats with two goals and an assist.
Hibbeler got his first point of the night when he fired a shot on the Asiago goal that was left on the doorstep for Zach Luczyk to pick-up for his second goal in as many nights. The score, 1-0, would stand for the remainder of the first period.
Coming out of the first intermission, it was Matthew Peca with his first goal of the Bobcats' European trip. Peca's power-play goal came off of assists from Zach Tolkinen and Jordan Samuels-Thomas.
Late in the second, Hibbeler was coming back on the ice after serving a penalty and took a pass from Bryce Van Brabant just above the blue line in Asiago's defensive zone. Hibbeler skated in, one-on-one, and beat the Asiago goalie to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
Minutes later, Hibbeler scored his second goal of the game to give the Bobcats a four-goal lead. On the power play again, Clay Harvey hooked up with Luczyk who put a shot on goal. Asiago's goalie kicked it out to his right where Hibbeler was waiting to bang home the rebound.
In goal, Michael Garteig stopped all 20 of Asiago's shots on goal over the first two periods before giving way to Jacob Meyer for the third period. In two games against Asiago, Garteig held the Vipers scoreless while stopping 25 shots-on-goal.
