Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goalie Eric Hartzell has been named to the CollegeHockeyNews.com First Team, as announced by the CHN staff on Tuesday, Apr. 9.
The All-CHN teams, which highlights the top individual performers of the year, as voted upon by the College Hockey News staff. Hartzell was joined on the first team by CHN Player of the Year Danny Kristo from North Dakota as well as Boston College's Johnny Gaudreau, Nebraska-Omaha's Ryan Walters, St. Cloud State's Nick Jensen and UMass Lowell's Chad Ruhwedel.
Hartzell was one of two ECAC Hockey players selected, as St. Lawrence's Greg Carey was named to the second team with Boston College's Steve Whitney, North Dakota's Corban Knight, Michigan's Jacob Trouba, Minnesota's Nate Schmidt and Providence goalie Jon Gillies. Gillies and Trouba were also named to the all-rookie team along with St. Cloud's Johnny Brodzinski, Boston University's Danny O'Regan, Miami's Riley Barber and Boston College's Mike Matheson.
Hartzell was previously honored as an All-New England First Team selection as well as an ECAC Hockey First Team pick after earning the league's Player of the Year and Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year awards. Hartzell is also a Hobey Baker Memorial Award Top Ten Finalist.
Hartzell was previously announced as a 2013 Hobey Baker Award Finalist as well as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and the Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year and an All-ECAC Hockey First Team honoree. Hartzell was a three-time ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Month as well as a two-time ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week. He was also featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd".
The senior goalie is currently 29-6-5 with a 1.55 goals-against-average and a .933 save percentage. His GAA currently ranks third among all NCAA Division I goalies, but first among all goalies with over 2,000 minutes played (2,402:38), while his save percentage ranks eighth. This season, Hartzell has held opposing teams to fewer than three goals in a game in 35 of his 40 starts. He also ranks second in winning percentage (.788) and shutouts (5), which also rank as the most in a single-season in Quinnipiac history.
Hartzell has also been a major factor in Quinnipiac's first trip to the NCAA Frozen Four - set for Apr. 11-13 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Bobcats hit the ice on Thursday, Apr. 11 at 8 p.m. to face St. Cloud State in the night's second semifinal game, available live on ESPNU. The NCAA National Championship Game is set for Saturday, Apr. 13 at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
