HAMDEN, Conn. - The nationally-ranked No. 20 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against Ohio State at the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the tie, Quinnipiac goes to 2-1-1 on the season while Ohio State goes to 1-1-1.

Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) accounted for all of the Bobcats' offense with a goal midway through the second period. Peca's goal is his first of the season as well as his second point of the year. Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was rock-solid for the Bobcats, turning back 24 of Ohio State's 25 shots on goal.

Quinnipiac outshot Ohio State, 32-25, and was able to kill off all three penalties it faced. The Bobcats have now killed off 18-straight penalties to start the year.

"I think we're playing well right now," Hartzell said. "Absolutely, we're still trying to figure it out. We had a bitter taste in our mouth after how last year ended, and we have a lot of guys back and we have something to prove."

Peca scored the game's first goal at the 9:45 mark of the first period. when he picked up a loose puck in front of the Quinnipiac bench. Peca skated into the Buckeyes' zone, between the face-off circles and wristed a shot past Ohio State's Brady Hjelle to give Quinnipiac an  early 1-0 lead.

"It was just a broken play," Peca explained. "Someone from their side turned it over and I found it on my tape. It turned into a 3-and-2 and Kellen [Jones] set-up a perfect screen in front."

With less than half of the third period to play Tyler Lundey sent a puck in front of Hartzell that found Matt Johnson on the doorstep for a one-timer that put Ohio State on the board and tied the game at 1-1.

"They had a guy on the wall," Hartzell explained. "He turned and threw the puck in front of the goal and their guy was able to get a stick on it and chip it up off the bar and in the goal."

Quinnipiac and Ohio State resume play on Saturday, Oct. 20 for the second game of their two-game set at the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats and Buckeyes square off at 4 p.m. Following the game, High Point Solutions Arena will host the popular "Skate With The Bobcats". Fans are asked to bring their own skates.
