Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Visits Green Acres Elementary School

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team visited Green Acres Elementary School in North Haven, Conn. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2010. The Bobcats read a variety of children's books to the school's kindergarten students. The visit to the elementary school was part of Quinnipiac Athletics' Positive Play initiative, designed to encourage Quinnipiac's student-athletes to be involved in the community.

The entire roster was on-hand at the North Haven elementary school, in addition to associate head coach Ben Syer and Lorraine Onofrio, the men's and women's ice hockey secretary. The Bobcats sat with over 50 students in the school's cafeteria, reading and coloring with the young children. Boomer the Bobcat was also on-hand to visit the school's children.

In addition to visiting the kindergarten kids in the school's cafeteria, several student-athletes visited fourth and fifth grade classrooms to talk to the students about playing sports in college and the importance of getting a good education. Mike Dalhuisen (Nymegen, Holland), Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) met with a fourth grade class while Clay Harvey (Gull Lake, Saskatchewan) and Mike Glaicar (Kamloops, British Columbia) spoke with separate fourth grade classes.

Quinnipiac is back in action this weekend when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Canisius in a two-game series set for Sunday, Jan. 16 and Monday, Jan. 17, with both games set for a 4:05 p.m. start from Buffalo State Sports Center.
