Quinnipiac men's ice
hockey sophomores Loren Barron (Glendora, Calif.) and Eric Hartzell
(White Bear Lake, Minn.) earned weekly honors as announced by the
ECAC Hockey office today. Barron earned MLX Skates ECAC Hockey
Player of the Week honors while Hartzell earned MLX Skates Goalie
of the Week honors. The duo turned in career nights as Quinnipiac
defeated nationally-ranked No. 8/9 Nebraska Omaha, 4-3 and 3-2, on
Thursday and Friday night, respectively.
Hartzell was outstanding against the Mavericks as he stopped 97 of
102 shots on goal over the two-game series. On Thursday, Dec. 30,
Hartzell kicked-away 53 of UNO's 56 shots on goal en route to a 4-3
win, his sixth of the season. He picked up his seventh win of the
year, and 10th career victory, on Friday, Dec. 31 when he stopped
44 of 46 shots by Nebraska Omaha, including 14 in the third period
that saw a tie between both teams, 2-2. For the year, Hartzell's
7-2-0 record ranks 10th among all NCAA Division I goalies while he
has also posted a .926 save percentage and a 2.54 goals-against
average.
Barron won his second ECAC Hockey honor of all-time after a
six-point scoring surge helped the Bobcats to a two-game sweep of
Nebraska Omaha. Barron entered Thursday's game with four points
through 17 games played before doubling his season output with an
one-goal, three-assist performance. He followed that with a
two-assist outing that also saw him get the helper on Zach Hansen's
game-winning goal late in the third period. His five assists in the
two games equal his 2009-10 output while his one goal and nine
assists for 10 points already surpass last year's totals.
Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) was also nominated for
Rookie of the Week, which went to Union's Matt Weninger. Jones
totaled three points over the Bobcats' two games against Nebraska
Omaha on three assists.
Quinnipiac returns to action this weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey
tilts when it hosts Colgate on Friday, Jan. 7 and Cornell on
Saturday, Jan. 8. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. start at the TD
Bank Sports Center.
