ITHACA, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team lost to Cornell, 4-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y. Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) scored Quinnipiac's only goal of the night as the Bobcats drop to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in ECAC Hockey. Cornell improves to 2-1-0 in league play and 2-3-0 overall.
Braden Birch put Cornell on the board first with his first goal of the season at the 13:46 mark of the first period with an assist on the play going to Jordan Kary. The Big Red scored again in the first period at the 18:14 mark when Nick D'Agostino took a pass from Mike Devlin at the point and threw the puck on goal from just below the blue line. The puck hit Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ontario) and bounced over his shoulder and into the goal to give the Big Red a 2-0 lead.
Connor Jones cut Cornell's two-goal lead in half at the 5:02 mark of the second period. Cornell turned the puck over in the neutral zone, with Jones intercepting a Big Red pass at center ice. Jones skated in and ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Mike Garman to put Quinnipiac within a goal, 2-1. It was Jones' second goal of the season.
Locke Jillson scored 43 seconds later to push the Big Red's lead back to two goals. Jillson took a pass from John Esposito and one-timed a shot on Clarke. The puck was initially stopped, but not controlled, allowing it to slide past Clarke to give Cornell a 3-1 lead.
Sean Whitney scored at the 16:39 mark of the third period with assists credited to Dan Nichols and Rodger Craig. Whitney took a pass from Nichols in the slot and wristed a shot through a crowd in front of Clarke in goal, finding the top right corner of the net to give Cornell a three-goal lead, 4-1.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate in an ECAC Hockey match-up set for a 4 p.m. start at Starr Rink.
