HAMDEN, Conn. - With a 2-1 win against Dartmouth on Sunday, March 7, that also sent the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team to the 2010 ECAC Hockey Championship Quarterfinals against Union, Bobcats head coach Rand Pecknold won his 300th career game. Pecknold becomes the 67th coach in NCAA Division I Ice Hockey history to reach the 300-win mark.
For the year, Quinnipiac also improves to 19-16-2 on the year, giving Pecknold his 12th year in his last 13 behind the bench with 19 wins. In addition, Quinnipiac's unbeaten streak when leading after two periods is extended to 50 games as the Bobcats have posted a 46-0-4 record over that span.
Currently the all-time winningest coach in program history, Pecknold is also one of four coaches in Quinnipiac athletics history to reach 300 wins. Under Pecknold's guidance, the Bobcats have posted 14 consecutive winning seasons, including 20-win campaigns in 11 of those. For the past several seasons, Pecknold has led the Bobcats to national prominence, including the highest ranking in programs history when Quinnipiac was ranked 4th in the USCHO.com Division I poll. At that time, Quinnipiac also ranked 1st among all NCAA Division I teams in the PairWise Rankings. The accomplishment has become the standard of the past four years as Quinnipiac has consistently been ranked in the national polls. Under Pecknold's leadership, Quinnipiac has featured the leading scorer in NCAA Division I hockey, as well as countless all-academic and all-league playes as well as a three-time all-American in Reid Cashman. Over the past three seasons, Quinnipiac has seen close to a dozen players go on to the professional ranks.
In just his second year in ECAC Hockey, Pecknold led Quinnipiac to the ECAC Hockey Championship Game. Since then, Quinnipiac has been ranked among the top teams in the league and has hosted the ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round series in each of the last four years.
This weekend, Quinnipiac will head to Troy, N.Y. to take on the No. 3 Union College Dutchemen in theThe ECAC Hockey Championship Quarterfinals, to commence on Friday, March 12 with a best-of-three games format through Sunday, March 14.
