HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team clinched home-ice advantage for the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament with an 8-3 win against Brown at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With the win, and a loss by Harvard, Quinnipiac can finish in either 6th or 7th place. The Bobcats are now 16-15-2 overall and 10-11-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Brown drops to 8-16-4 overall and 6-11-4 in league action. Quinnipiac will host the ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round Series on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 with the third game, if necessary, scheduled for Sunday, March 7.
"I thought my team played hard tonight and played with confidence," said Quinnipiac Head Coach Rand Pecknold. "It's something we've been lacking a little bit lately, but we played hard and the confidence was definitely there to make plays and that was a big difference for us."
Quinnipiac senior captain Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) led Quinnipiac with a pair of goals as well as an assist, including the game's first marker just under three minutes into the game. After Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) skated down the right side of the ice and was cut-off in front of the net by a defender, the senior center cut behind the Brown bench. Lampe wheeled around and found Zach Davies (Smithers, B.C.) on the doorstep, who tipped the puck across the crease to Beaudoin. Beaudoin then punched it past Brown's Mike Clemente for the early lead, 1-0.
"It was great to get a win on Senior Night," Beaudoin said. "All the credit goes to our younger guys. Our freshmen took it upon themselves to win one for the seniors, and they played great."
Freshmen Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) and Loren Barron (Glendora, Calif.) led the Bobcats' first-year players in scoring. Langlois scored two of Quinnipiac's eight goals, while Barron assisted on three goals in the game. Freshman Ben Arnt (Oakdale, Minn.) had a goal and an assist while Mike Dalhuisen (Nymegen, Holland) had two assists.
Following Beaudoin's goal, Brown tied the game at the 8:57 mark when David Brownschidle was set-up on a play by Jarred Smith and Jeremy Russell. From there, it was all-Quinnipiac as the Bobcats scored five unanswered goals.
Langlois scored on a pass from Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) and Dalhuisen, followed by goals from Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.), Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.), and Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Sask.). Atkinson had three assists in the game, while D'Arcy Oakes (Shanty Bay, Ont.) and Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) also had assists.
After a goal by Brown's Francis Drolet, from Bobby Farnham and Sean McMonagle, late in the second period, Quinnipiac headed into the third period with a four-goal lead, 6-2. Langlois and Beaudoin both scored their second goals of the game before Harry Zolnierczyk scored with just under four minutes to play for Brown's third goal.
In goal, Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) stopped 26 of 29 shots in goal to pick up his 11th win of the season. The game also marked the first appearance of junior Pat McGann (Evergreen Park, Ill.) since the 2006-07 season. McGann stopped the only shot he saw on the night.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 when it hosts Yale for an ECAC Hockey match-up at the TD Bank Sports Center at 7:30 p.m. The game can be viewed live on the New England Sports Network (NESN).
