Men's Ice Hockey Ranked 4th In The Nation In USCHO.com Division I Poll
HAMDEN, Conn. - With the nation's best record at 12-1-0 for a .923 winning percentage and a Division I-best eight-game winning streak, the Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team received its highest ranking in program history, sliding into the No. 4 spot in the USCHO.com Division I Poll, while also receiving seven first-place votes. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, the Bobcats moved up from 10th to No. 6, while also receiving one first-place vote. Quinnipiac currently sits as the top team in the nation in the PairWise Rankings while also ranking fourth in the INCH Power Rankings.
Quinnipiac opened the year receiving one vote in the USCHO.com preseason poll before opening the season with a sweep on the road at No. 17 Ohio State. The Bobcats moved into the top 20 in the USCHO.com poll with the two wins, while receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll through Nov. 9, 2009. The Bobcats jumped to 13th in both polls on Nov. 16 before cracking the top 10 for the first time in program history on Nov. 23 with a No. 9 ranking in the USCHO.com poll and No. 10 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
Quinnipiac features the nation's leading offense with 56 goals to date. In 13 games, Quinnipiac is averaging 4.13 goals per contest, the second most in college hockey. The Bobcats' high-flying offense has received points from 20 of 22 players to hit the ice for Quinnipiac, with 15 of those 20 scoring goals. Quinnipiac also features five players to reach double-digit scoring early on.
Individually, Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) leads the way with eight goals and a team-best 11 assists, followed by goal-leader Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points. Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) has scored eight goals and assisted on six more for 14 points while senior captain Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) follows behind with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) has reached a personal-best six goals, with four assists, for 10 points while Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) leads all Quinnipiac rookies with five goals and five assists for 10 points.
Sophomore Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) is the only goalie in Division I hockey with a 1.000 winning percentage on the heels of a seven-game personal win streak for an 8-0-0 overall record. Clarke ranks among the national leaders in save percentage (.932) and goals-against average (2.24). Six of Clarke's eight wins this season have come against ECAC Hockey schools, helping the Bobcats to a perfect 7-0-0 mark in league play for first place in the standings.
No. 4/6 Quinnipiac faces another tough opponent this weekend when they head to New Haven, Conn. to face No. 10/10 Yale University on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Ingalls Rink. The Bobcats close out their weekend ECAC Hockey action at Brown University in Providence, R.I. on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. Quinnipiac will face Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. before hosting American International College on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
