HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost to Union College, 4-2, in an ECAC Hockey contest at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats drop to 11-7-2 overall and 6-4-2 in ECAC Hockey while Union improves to 11-8-1 overall and 4-4-0 in league play.
Union junior Jason Walters scored two first period goals as the Dutchmen took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Walters' first goal came less than four minutes into the game and was assisted on by Brock Matheson and Adam Presizniuk. Matheson's assist was his fourth of the year while Presizniuk picked up his 11th assist of the season.
Bobcat senior Andrew Meyer (St. Louis, Mo.), who was celebrating his 24th birthday, scored his second goal of the season at the 13:08 mark. Freshman Kevin Bui (Edmonton, Alb.), who was playing in his first collegiate game, took a pass from Chris Myers (Wallaceburg, Ont.) in the corner to the left of Union goalie Corey Milan. Bui's pass found Meyer waiting at the point. His slapshot beat Milan low to the far side of the net, tying the game at 1-1 with less than seven minutes to play in the first period. The assist was Bui's first career point while Myers picks up his third assist of the season.
Walters gave Union a 2-1 lead at the 16:25 mark. The Dutchmen put a rush on freshman goalie Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.), who stopped several shots before Walters pushed the puck past Clarke for the lead. Presizniuk and Stephane Boileau was credited with his 10th assist of the year.
Union took a two-goal lead just under five minutes into the second period when Presizniuk scored his ninth goal of the season on a pass from Walters. Presizniuk took a pass from at the point just above the face-off circle and unleashed a shot that slipped past a screened Clarke in goal. Walters' and Mike Wakita were both credited with assists on the play.
Quinnipiac moved within a goal, 3-2, at the 11:21 mark of the second period when David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) handled the puck in the corner to the right of the Quinnipiac bench before dropping a pass back to Matt Sorteberg (Anoka, Minn.). Sorteberg put a shot on goal that was stopped by Milan and dribbled out in front of the crease. The rebound was collected by Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) who netted his eighth goal of the season. The assist was Marshall's 14th of the year, while Sorteberg picked up his second.
Union added a goal late in the game when Mario Valery-Trabucco netted his fifth goal of the season. John Simpson picked up his fifth assist while Mike Harr picked up his first.
Quinnipiac returns to action on next weekend when it heads to Lewiston, N.Y. to take on Niagara University in a non-conference two-game series on Jan. 16-17.
