EDISON, N.J. – Freshman Kasim Chandler (Newark, N.J.) of the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team has been named the MAAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, which was officially announced on Monday, Nov. 18 2013 by the league's front office. Chandler averaged 16 points in two games for the Bobcats last week, which included a breakout performance against La Salle on national television.
"It is a terrific honor for Kasim Chandler to win the MAAC's Rookie of the Week Award," said head coach Tom Moore. "He had a great first week of his college career, averaging 14 points and nearly four assists in sparking us to two big wins. I have been very impressed with his poise and confidence for a freshman, especially in our nationally-televised game at La Salle."
For the second consecutive week, Chandler averaged double-figures in points to lead the Quinnipiac men's basketball team. In a 1-1 week for the Bobcats, Chandler recorded a team-high 19 points on 5-of-13 shooting in a game against La Salle that was displayed on ESPN2. He made nine of his 10 free-throw attempts, dished out four assists and hauled in three rebounds in the television debut.
Quinnipiac's win came against Albany, 79-69, in which Chandler once again played a large role on offense. He finished with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting and dished out a game-high five assists. He also nabbed one steal, one block and two rebounds.
Through his first three games at Quinnipiac, Chandler is averaging 14.3 points and 3.7 assists per game. He leads the team in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6) and steals per game (2.0).
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20 with their second home game of the 2013-14 season. Quinnipiac welcomes Hampton to the TD Bank Sports Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
