EDISON, N.J. – Selected by coaches around the league, Quinnipiac men's basketball senior forward Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) was named to the 2013-14 All-MAAC Preseason Men's Basketball Third Team, announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013. Azotam earned the respect of the voters after tremendous sophomore and junior campaigns which saw multiple Northeast Conference accolades.
Joining Azotam on the MAAC Preseason Team are Michael Alvarado and Emmy Andujar of Manhattan, Rob Poole of Siena, Chris Manhertz of Canisius and Maurice Barrow of Fairfield.
Last year, the rugged 6-7, 231-pound forward, Azotam, averaged 13.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game for the Bobcats, and earned second team All-Northeast Conference honors. He corralled 10 double-doubles throughout the season, which was amongst the leaders in the NEC. Offensively, Azotam emerged as a finisher around the rim evidenced by his .528 shooting percentage over the last two seasons. He also shot closer to 70 percent from the charity stripe as well.
Azotam enters his senior season, and his first in the MAAC, with career totals of 1,085 points and 716 rebounds. He eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau last year during a 17-point performance against Saint Francis University on Feb. 16. Azotam was the 26th player in Quinnipiac history to reach the milestone and only trails Jared Grasso '02 (1,134) for eighth place amongst Division I scorers at QU. His 716 rebounds are only second to Justin Rutty '11 among QU Division I players.
The first and second teams will be release on Thursday and Friday of this week, with the major awards being released on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10 am. Fans can join the conversation on Twitter using the hash-tag, #MAACHoops.
Quinnipiac's season opens at the Connecticut 6 Classic on Saturday, November 9 against Hartford. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.
