Ike Azotam and Zaid Hearst Earn MAAC College Sports Madness Preseason Honors

HAMDEN, Conn. – Two members of the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team – senior Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) and junior Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Md.) – have been named to the College Sports Madness MAAC Preseason All-Conference Team, announced on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 by the association's committee.

College Sports Madness selects the projected top men's basketball players from every conference across the nation. These players are expected to make significant contributions to their teams during this coming season and deserve significant recognition.

Azotam - an All-NEC Second Team selection last season - averaged 13.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, which ranked him 13th and 6th, respectively, in the conference. Azotam had 10 double-doubles on the year, which included a 22-point, 11-rebound showing in the win at Saint Francis University on Jan. 17. Azotam also reached an important milestone last year when he recorded his 1,000th career point to become Quinnipiac's 26th player to accomplish the feat. He remains just 49 points shy of Jared Grasso '02 for eighth on the QU Division I scoring list.

Hearst was Quinnipiac's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last year. Hearst put together his best basketball down the final stretch where he recorded double-digits in six of his last seven games. A versatile wing-man, the 6-4 guard already has 565 career points through his first two years at Quinnipiac. Hearst's season was highlighted on two separate occasions – at Boston University (12/16) and at LIU Brooklyn (3/2) – where he notched a season-best of 18 points in each game.

College Sports Madness also selected its projected player, rookie and coach of the year candidates. Canisius' Billy Barron was selected as the Player of the Year; Siena's Lavon Long was tabbed Rookie of the Year; and Manhattan's Steve Masiello was named Coach of the Year.

Quinnipiac's regular-season tips off on Saturday, Nov. 9 with the fifth annual Connecticut 6 Classic from Webster Bank Arena. Joining the Bobcats will be Hartford, Yale, Central Connecticut, Sacred Heart, and fellow MAAC foe Fairfield. For the second year in a row, Quinnipiac and Hartford will open the three-game showcase at 3 p.m. Yale and CCSU will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by Sacred Heart and Fairfield in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
