Men's Basketball Announces 2012-13 Schedule

Men's Basketball 2012-13 Schedule

HAMDEN, Conn. – Four teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, a premiere early-season tournament featuring traditional national power programs in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and a fourth straight appearance to the annual Connecticut 6 Classic highlight the 2012-13 Quinnipiac University men's basketball schedule, announced on Friday, August 24 by Head Coach Tom Moore.

"Our goal each year is to play a non-conference schedule that prepares us for the Northeast Conference regular-season," said Coach Moore. "By playing meaningful games against NCAA Tournament caliber teams and nationally-recognized programs, we hope to challenge our guys by providing them with quality opponents each time we take the floor. A highly-competitive schedule is part of the Quinnipiac University basketball experience."

The regular-season tips off on Saturday, November 10 with a game at Hartford at the Connecticut 6 Classic. Previously hosted by Mohegan Sun in years past, the 2012 event marks the first time the invitational will take place at a participating members' venue. Joining the Bobcats and the Hawks in West Hartford, Conn. will be Yale, Sacred Heart, Fairfield and Central Connecticut State. QU and Hartford kickoff the tournament, followed by SHU and Yale, and then the nightcap between Fairfield and CCSU.

Quinnipiac then endures a quick turnaround after the season-opener with their home-opener just two days later. The Bobcats seek revenge against American University on Monday, November 12 at the TD Bank Sports Center. Last year, the Eagles scratched out a mere one-point victory in the waning seconds to defeat QU in Washington, D.C.

On Thursday (Nov. 15), the Bobcats will travel to Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to compete in the 2012 Paradise Jam. It will be the first in-season, invitational tournament in Bobcats history. Quinnipiac will take on Iona College in the opening round on Friday (Nov. 16) at the Sports and Fitness Center at University of Virgin Islands. Iona earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last year, but was ousted by BYU in the opening round. Tip-off with the Gaels is tentatively scheduled for 9 p.m., but is subject to change due to television.

Depending on the result, the Bobcats face its second opponent - either Connecticut or Wake Forest - Saturday (Nov. 17) or Sunday (Nov. 18). 2011 National Champion and Big East powerhouse UConn won the Paradise Jam back in 2008, while the ACC's Wake Forest will make its first-ever appearance in the invitational. The other side of the bracket features first round matchups: New Mexico vs. Illinois-Chicago and Mercer vs. George Mason. All third-round games will be played on Monday (Nov. 19), with the championship game scheduled for 9 p.m.

"The Paradise Jam always brings in some of the best teams in the country," said Coach Moore. "UConn, New Mexico State and Wake Forest are established programs from some of the best conferences in NCAA Division I."

From there the Bobcats return home for a week of rest before the start of a three-game home-stand. Quinnipiac opens the stint with Lehigh University, a 2012 NCAA Tournament contender, on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. Led by C.J. McCollum, who will return for his senior season, the 15th seeded Mountain Hawks ousted the 2nd seeded Duke Blue Devils in the first round of the big dance a year ago. The Bobcats conclude the home stand with Colgate (Dec. 5) at 7 p.m. and Vermont (Dec. 8) at 3 p.m. The game against the Catamounts, who were also included in the field of 68 this past March, will follow a women's game against Holy Cross at 12 p.m.

The following week Quinnipiac hits the road for a pair of match-ups in the America East. On Sunday, Dec. 16, the Bobcats square off against Boston University at Case Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. tilt. Last season, the Q stormed back to erase a 13-point halftime deficit and defeated the Terriers, 59-53, a game that was televised on NESN. The Bobcats wrap up the road trip on Friday, Dec. 21 at the University of Albany at 7 p.m. Quinnipiac renews a series that hasn't taken place since the 2002 campaign. The Bobcats hold a 6-2 mark all-time against the Great Danes.

The Bobcats conclude their home non-conference schedule on the final Saturday of the year against Maine (Dec. 29) at 3 p.m. After a two-year break in the series, Quinnipiac looks to extend its current three-game winning streak to four this year. The Black Bears ended their 2011-12 campaign with a loss to Vermont in the Quarterfinals of the America East Tournament.

The all-important Northeast Conference schedule starts three days into the New Year with back-to-back home games at the Bank. Both opponents participated in the 2012 NEC Tournament, teams that include St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 3) and LIU Brooklyn (Jan. 5). The matinee with the Blackbirds will be the backend of a doubleheader, with the women's game set for 12 p.m. Back in March, Quinnipiac ousted St. Francis (N.Y.) in the quarterfinals of the playoff and before falling to LIU Brooklyn, the eventual 2012 NEC Champion, in the semifinals.

Following the conclusion of the home stand, the Bobcats hit the road for their first NEC contest away from home against Bryant (Jan. 10). QU defeated the Bulldogs twice last season, taking a double-overtime thriller the second time around in Ridgefield, R.I. In arguably the toughest stretch of the schedule, the Bobcats welcome Sacred Heart on Saturday (Jan. 12), wrap up non-conference play at Hampton (Jan. 14) and then heads out to Pennsylvania for showdowns with Robert Morris (Jan. 17) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (Jan. 19). The afternoon affair with the Pioneers will be the second game of a QU basketball doubleheader at the Bank.

The remainder of the schedule features six home games and six away games. Quinnipiac will play host to CCSU (Jan. 24), Fairleigh Dickinson (Jan. 26), Monmouth (Feb. 7), Robert Morris (Feb. 14), Saint Francis (Pa.) (Feb. 16) and Bryant (Feb. 23). When hosting the Knights and the Red Flash, the women's team will play prior to the men's team, conlcuding the slate of QU basketball doubleheaders. The 3 p.m. tilt against the Bulldogs will be Senior Day at the TD Bank Sports Center, with a brief ceremony prior to tip-off.

The 2013 Northeast Conference Tournament will once again feature the league's top eight teams in a single-elimination playoff. The tourney opens on Wednesday, March 6 with the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals on Saturday, March 9 and the finals on Tuesday, March 12. The finals will be televised on ESPN with the winner earning a trip to the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Fans interested in purchasing season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign can call the QU Ticket Office at 203-582-3905, visit the official website of Quinnipiac athletics, or make a trip to the TD Bank Sports Center Ticket Office.
