HAMDEN, Conn. – 12 members of the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team appeared in the scoring column on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats cruised past Navy, 78-54, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. Senior James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points and sophomore Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) posted his third double-double in as many games, lifting QU to its second straight triumph at the Bank.
With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 2-1 on the season and moved to 1-1 against Navy all-time. The Midshipmen dropped to 2-2 on the year.
Johnson, now just four points shy of Robert Vacca for 17th on the all-time career scoring list, finished 5-of-11 from the floor with six rebounds and four helpers. Azotam collected his fifth career double-double, as the 6-for-7 forward poured in 15 points and grabbed 14 boards.
QU jumped out to a quick lead in this one, as the Bobcats opened a 16-3 lead through five minutes of play. The teams exchanged baskets through a short stretch, when Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.) sparked another run by the home team. A Jackson free-throw opened a 15-4 run over the next six minutes, granting the Bobcats a 23 point lead. Navy chipped four points off their deficit in the closing minutes, leaving QU with a 37-18 lead as the halftime whistle sounded.
The second half of action featured much of the same as the first. The Bobcats posted an 18-6 run after the break, taking their largest lead of the game, 58-24, after a jumper from Zaid Hearst. With 14 minutes left and a mountain to climb for Navy, the Bobcats coasted to an easy non-conference victory.
Nate` Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) registered 13 points, including three from long-distance, as the freshman guard compiled his second double-digit outing of the season. Jamee Jackson finished with seven points and five boards, while Hearst and Dave Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) each added five points for the Bobcats' backcourt. Dave Johnson also added a game-high five assists to his stat line.
Freshman Ousmane Drame (Boston, Mass.) was stellar on the boards again, as the 6-foot-9 forward pulled down six to go along with four points. Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del.) scored four points and three others finished with two.
Several key statistics told the story of the game. The Bobcats forced 22 Navy turnovers that led to eight points on the other end. In his debut with the Bobcats, Garvey Young (Washington, D.C.) accounted for three of the team's eight steals. In addition, QU held a 47-32 edge on the glass, including 17 on offense which led to 10 second-chance points. Quinnipiac also knocked down 10-of-30 from behind the arc.
The Midshipmen were led by Isaiah Roberts who finished with eight points and three rebounds.
The Bobcats return to action with their first true road game of the season. QU heads down south to the nation's capital for a showdown against American University.
