HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University senior men's basketball forward Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) and junior guard James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 18 First Team, the organization today announced. Rutty takes the honor for the second straight year, while Johnson earns his first honor. The 245 student-athletes, from 24 districts, are eligible for the State Farm Coaches' Division I All-America teams, to be announced on Saturday, April 2, at 9:30 a.m. (EDT) at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston during the NABC Convention and NCAA® Final Four®.
Rutty averaged 14.6 points (10th-NEC) and a league-best 9.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.0 percent from the floor (3rd-NEC) despite battling injuries in his senior season. He compiled 11 double-doubles, second-best in the league to Central Connecticut's Ken Horton (12), despite playing seven fewer games. His 4.04 offensive rebounds per game led the league. Rutty's became the Northeast Conference's all-time leading rebounder in his last game against Robert Morris, pushing his career total to 1,025.
Johnson led the Bobcats at 16.1 points (5th-NEC), 3.6 assists (12th-NEC) and 1.6 steals (4th-NEC) in 33.87 minutes per game (7th-NEC). He shot 81.4 percent from the free-throw line (7th-NEC) and 37.6 percent from long range (13th-NEC), and compiled 2.55 three-point field goals made per game (3rd-NEC) and a 2.36 assist-to-turnover ratio (4th-NEC). Johnson made seven three-point field goals in a single game on three different occasions this season, and has been impressively durable, starting each of the 95 games Quinnipiac has played in his three years in Hamden.
