Men's Basketball Falls At Mount St. Mary's, 72-63
HAMDEN, Conn. - James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) scored the 1,000th point of his career, but the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team was defeated by Mount St. Mary's, 69-61, Saturday night at Knott Arena. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 12-7 (4-4 NEC), while the Mountaineers improve to 7-14 (5-3 NEC).
Johnson finished with 11 points and a game-high seven assists for the Bobcats, while Deontay Twyman (Olney, Md.) had a team-high 16 points. Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.) also finished in double digits with 13 points.
Shawn Atupem led all scorers with 17 points to go along with six rebounds and six steals for Mount St. Mary's. Josh Castellanos had 12 points. David Golladay had a game-high seven rebounds.
The Mount scored the game's first four points and never trailed. The lead in the first half extended to as many as 11 points on a Norfleet three-pointer at the 6:53 mark, but the Bobcats whittled the advantage down to two points, 29-27, after Twyman knocked down a desperation three-pointer off glass at the halftime buzzer.
Mount St. Mary's quickly extended to a 10-point lead in the second half, and with the lead at 12 with 10:55 remaining in regulation, Quinnipiac went on a 10-0 run, capped by a Dominique Langston (Bridgeport, Conn.) three-pointer at the 7:31 mark. But the Mount immediately responded with a 7-0 run to re-establish a nine-point cushion. Quinnipiac would draw to within no closer than four points the rest of the way.
The Bobcats return home to face Robert Morris Thursday in a rematch of last year's NEC Tournament Championship Game. The game will be broadcast live on MSG-TV. Opening tip from the TD Bank Sports Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
