Kelly Babstock and James Johnson Named Quinnipiac November Athletes of the Month

HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and men's basketball junior guard James Johnson have been named Quinnipiac's Athletes of the Month for November.

Babstock's record-breaking November included 10 goals and five assists, as she increased her team-high totals to 15 goals and 18 assists on the season overall. On Nov. 2, in a 5-2 victory over Princeton, Babstock scored her first goal of the month. She picked up a goal and an assist on Nov. 5 in a 3-2 victory over Union. Babstock's first-career hat trick came on Nov. 12 against Harvard in a 4-1 victory. The freshman made Quinnipiac women's ice hockey history when she collected her second-career hat trick the following night in a 4-3 overtime loss to Dartmouth. No Bobcat before Babstock had previously recorded two hat tricks in the same season. Babstock eclipsed Quinnipiac's single-season points (30) and assists (17) records when she netted a program single-game record six points (two goals, four assists) on Nov. 26 in 9-1 victory over Sacred Heart.

Babstock was awarded ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Rookie of the Week twice during the month, the first on Nov. 16, after her back-to-back hat trick performances, and again on Nov. 30 following her six-point performance. The freshman helped lead Quinnipiac to a 6-3-0 record during the month.

Johnson averaged team-highs of 18.4 points, 3.8 assists, 1.8 steals in 35.0 minutes per game to go along with team-bests in three-point field-goal percentage (.424) and free-throw percentage (.900) in the month. He also averaged 5.6 rebounds per game, second-best on the team. Johnson led the Bobcats to a 4-1 record in November, including wins over Yale, Hartford, Dartmouth and Maine.

Johnson scored at least 15 points in each of the Bobcats' five games. He began the season with a 16-point, six rebound, five-assist performance against Yale at the Connecticut 6 Classic, before pouring in a season-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists against Hartford. The Bobcats fell to Vermont in spite of a gritty 18-point, six-rebound, five-steal performance from its floor general on Nov. 20.

The Queens, N.Y., native helped the Bobcats bounce back from their lone setback of the month with 15 points in a 69-52 road victory at Dartmouth, Nov. 23. Johnson closed out the month with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 75-67 win against Maine on Nov. 29.
