UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) compiled his 31st career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds and James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) and Deontay Twyman (Olney, Md.) added 16 points apiece as the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team defeated Yale, 84-75, Saturday night in the second annual Connecticut 6 Classic at Mohegan Sun Arena. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 1-0 overall and 4-0 under Head Coach Tom Moore in season openers. The Bulldogs fall to 0-1.
Johnson also added six rebounds and five assists, while Mike Gabriel (Chicago, Ill.) scored 10 points in his collegiate debut. Dave Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) contributed eight points and five assists. For the game, the Bobcats outshot the Bulldogs, 52.6 percent (30-57) to 42.0 percent (21-50) from the floor and 41.2 percent to 23.8 percent (5-21) from long range. Quinnipiac earned a 37-27 advantage on the boards a year after finishing second in the nation in rebound margin (+8.5). Yale took a slight edge in free-throw shooting, 77.8 percent (28-36) to 77.3 percent (17-22).
Greg Mangano paced Yale with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Austin Morgan and Porter Braswell also finished in double-figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bobcats immediately jumped out in front, going on a 9-0 run to start the game, and never trailed. Rutty got things started with a lay-up, before Raheem May-Thompson (London, England) connected on a mid-range jumper. Twyman nailed a three-pointer on the next possession and Rutty completed the run with a jumper. The lead extended to 10 on Ike Azotam's (Boston, Mass.) offensive rebound and putback at the 13:08 mark.
Consecutive James Johnson trifectas pushed the Quinnipiac lead to 12 at 22-10 at the 10:42 mark. The Bobcats took a 12-point lead three more times in the first half, the last on Gabriel's conventional three-point play with 35 seconds left in the period. Mangano hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to account for the 44-33 Quinnipiac lead at the break.
Mangano led all first-half scorers with 15 points, while James Johnson had 12 points for Quinnipiac. Rutty also added 11 points and a first-half high seven rebounds. The Bobcats shot 56.7 percent (17-30), including 55.6 percent (5-9) from three-point range in the half, while Yale made 38.5 percent (10-26). The Bobcats took a 21-13 edge on the boards.
The Bobcats again came out running in the second half, scoring the period's first six points to take a 17-point lead at 50-33 following two James Johnson free throws at the 17:50 mark. The lead swelled to 21 on Rutty's jumper in the paint at the 12:37 mark. The Bulldogs closed to within six points on a pair of Reggie Willhite free throws with 2:21 remaining, but Dominique Langston's (Bridgeport, Conn.) trifecta on the next possession effectively ended the Yale threat.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, when they play host to the University of Hartford in their home opener. Prior to the game, the Bobcats will unveil the 2009-10 Northeast Conference Regular Season Championship banner. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
