Men's Basketball Overpowers Meppel Red Giants, 109-61


MEPPEL, Netherlands - Freshman forward Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) scored 21 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and made five steals as the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team defeated the Meppel Red Giants, 109-61, in the Bobcats' European Tour opener Tuesday night. Deontay Twyman (Olney, Md.) added 20 points, while William Harrison (Bronx, N.Y.) had 16 points. Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.) and Raheem May-Thompson (London, England) had 13 points apiece, and nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Dave Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) also contributed eight points and eight assists.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the early going and never looked back. The lead swelled to 24 points at 28-4, and Quinnipiac held a 37-9 lead after the first quarter. Meppel held their own in the second quarter, taking a 21-19 advantage in the period, to cut the deficit to 26 points, 56-30, at the half.

Quinnipiac ran away with the game in the second half, extending the lead to as many as 57 points on Harrison's fast-break dunk with 4:23 remaining in regulation.

For the game, the Bobcats outshot the Red Giants, 52.6 percent (41-78) to 31.3 percent (20-64) from the floor, 33.3 percent (8-24) to 11.1 percent (3-27) from beyond the three-point arc, and 65.5 percent (19-29) to 54.5 percent (18-33) from the free-throw line. The Bobcats also took a 59-34 advantage on the glass.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday, when they face St. Jan-Antwerp in Belgium. Opening tip is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. (European)/2:45 p.m. ET.
