Justin Rutty Named NEC Co-Player of the Week

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University men's basketball sophomore forward Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) has been named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league office today announced. Rutty averaged 18.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in the Bobcats' two wins last week, including a 23-point, 16-rebound outburst at Long Island. The award, shared with Sacred Heart's Corey Hassan (19.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.5 apg. in wins at CCSU and against St. Francis (N.Y.)), is the first of Rutty's career.

Rutty shot 68.0 percent (17-25) from the floor for the week, including 11-for-16 shooting at LIU. The double-double at LIU pushed his NEC-leading total to 11 this season. It was also his third 20-point, 15-rebound performance of the season. He scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the second half as the Bobcats overcame a six-point second-half deficit to become the only NEC team to beat LIU at the Wellness Center this season.

Rutty began the week with a 13-point, six-rebound game against Fairleigh Dickinson, despite playing only 21 minutes. Rutty remains second in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (4.54), 23rd in rebounds per game (9.42) and 13th in field-goal percentage (.615). He's also averaged 15.3 points (9th-NEC) and 1.0 block per game (9th-NEC).

The Bobcats return to action Thursday, when they play host to Wagner. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.
