LORETTO, Pa. - Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) scored a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds as the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team earned a road win at Saint Francis (Pa.), 59-55, Thursday night at DeGol Arena. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 11-13 (7-6 NEC), while the Red Flash falls to 5-19 (2-11 NEC).
James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Bobcats, while Bryan Geffen (Queens, N.Y.) scored all 11 of his points in the second half, including a contested trifecta to put the Bobcats on top for good, late in the second half.
Mislav Jukic led the Red Flash with 15 points, while Marquis Ford (14) and Devin Sweetney (12) also finished in double-figures.
The Red Flash led for much of the first 27 minutes. The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-2 lead and didn't see the lead again until Johnson hit a runner at the 13:06 mark of the second half to give Quinnipiac a two-point advantage, 36-34. The Red Flash retook the lead, 49-48, on a long three-pointer from Ford at the 5:43 mark. But the Bobcats retook the lead for good on Geffen's trifecta at the 3:17 mark.
The Red Flash utilized the three-pointer to take a one-point lead, 27-26, into the break. Saint Francis hit 7-of-12 trifectas in the period, as opposed to 3-of-14 attempts from inside the arc. Saint Francis led by as many as 10 points, 21-11, with 10:19 remaining in the half, but the Bobcats outscored the Red Flash, 15-6, in the final 10 minutes. Ford led all scorers with nine points at the break, while Sweetney added seven and Grant Suprenant contributed six. Jeremy Baker (Washington, D.C.), James Feldeine (New York, N.Y.), Johnson and Rutty paced the Bobcats with six points each.
For the game, the Red Flash outshot the Bobcats, 43.8 percent (21-48) to 42.3 percent (22-52) from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-17) to 21.4 percent (3-14) from long range, and 71.4 percent (5-7) to 66.7 percent (12-18) from the free-throw line. The Bobcats took a 32-29 advantage from the free-throw line.
The Bobcats continue their western Pennsylvania road trip Saturday, when they face Robert Morris. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Sewell Center in Moon Township, Pa.
