HAMDEN, Conn. Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) compiled his NEC-leading 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds, but the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team was defeated by Bryant, 72-68, in a non-conference game at the TD Banknorth Sports Center Saturday. The Bobcats fall to 10-13 with the loss, while the Bulldogs improve to 7-17.
James Feldeine (New York, N.Y.) led the Bobcats with 15 points, four assists and three steals. James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) also contributed 14 points and Bryan Geffen (Queens, N.Y.) added 12. Nick Pontes led the Bulldogs with 21 points, while Adam Parzych added 19 points off the bench. Chris Birrell also netted 12 points.
After the Bobcats took a one-point advantage into the locker room at halftime, the Bulldogs opened the second half 11-3 run to take a seven-point lead, 43-36, at the 15:11 mark of the second half. The Bobcats would battle back to tie the game, 55-55, on a Rutty putback with 7:31 left to play. But Parzych immediately responded with the first of two 25-foot three-pointers from straight away to put the Bulldogs ahead for good.
Parzych and Pontes did the majority of their damage in the second half, scoring 17 and 13 points, respectively. Pontes did most of his work during a six-minute span early in the second. He scored 12 of his 13 second-half points in the stretch, including a pair of traditional three-point plays.
For the game, the Bulldogs outshot the Bobcats, 55.3 percent (26-47) to 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field, 60.0 percent (9-15) to 47.1 percent (8-17) from long range, and 73.3 percent (11-15) to 57.1 percent (12-21) from the free-throw line. The Bobcats outrebounded the Bulldogs, 34-26.
Quinnipiac returns to action Thursday, when they begin a two-game road swing through western Pennsylvania at Saint Francis. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at DeGol Arena.
