HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac University Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom Moore has announced sophomore Evann Baker (Washington, D.C.) and junior Jeremy Baker (Washington, D.C.) as co-captains for the 2008-09 season. Evann Baker was a 2007-08 Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team selection after averaging 10.9 points per game as a freshman. Jeremy Baker made immediate contributions this season, scoring 12.7 points and grabbing 9.0 rebounds per game in three games before sustaining a shoulder injury that has kept him out of the past two contests.
"It is with great pleasure that I announce Jeremy and Evann Baker as our co-captains for the 2008-09 season," said Moore. "I feel these two young men have the character, work ethic, toughness, and leadership skills that I am looking for in captains. They have been and will continue to be extremely important to our efforts as we build our program here at Quinnipiac University."
The elder of the Baker brothers came to Quinnipiac by way of Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where he was named an Honorable Mention JUCO All-American. He also earned All-Jayhawk Conference First Team recognition. In his first game with the Bobcats, Jeremy Baker scored the game-winning bucket on a put-back with two seconds remaining.
Evann Baker finished his freshman season second on the team in scoring while shooting a high percentage from the floor (.450), three-point range (.533) and the free-throw line (.833). After playing four years at Archbishop Carroll (D.C.) High School, Baker spent a post-graduate season at perennial basketball powerhouse Maine Central Institute. While at MCI, Baker turned in a now legendary performance at the Montverde (Fla.) Academy Invitational Tournament, scoring 99 points in three games, including a career-best 51-point output against Brevard Christian.
