Acrobatics and Tumbling Falls in NCATA National Semifinals to Azusa Pacific 284.725-278.140
AZUSA, Calif.- The Quinnipiac acrobatics and tumbling team was defeated by Azusa Pacific, 284.725-278.140, in the 2014 NCATA National Semifinals match at the Felix Event Center on Saturday Afternoon. The Bobcats completed a successful fourth season in the NCATA with a 6-3 overall record.
Azusa Pacific swept Quinnipiac in all six rounds.
Coming out of the first event of the afternoon, the Compulsory Event, Azusa Pacific held a slight lead, 38.45-38.10. The Cougars opened with consecutive victories in the Acro Heat with a score of 9.7 to Quinnipiac's 9.55 and Pyramid heats 10.0-to-9.85. The Bobcats responded with a heat victory in Toss, 9.85 -to-9.80. The Cougars would conclude the event taking Tumbling 8.95-to-8.85.
The Cougars swept the Acro Event, taking all three heats, to increase its overall lead to 29.25-28.80. Azusa took the Flip heat, 9.7-to-9.45; the Twist head, 9.80-to-9.65, and the Release heat, 9.75-to-9.70.
In the Pyramid event the Cougars edged the Bobcats in the first heat, 9.95-9.85. In the twisting pyramid round, seniors Gina Antonelli (Jackson, N.J.) and Ashaa Russell (Bronx, N.Y.), juniors Stephanie Palange (West Springfield, Mass.), Cara Seckinger (Danbury, Conn.) and Christine Rochester (Waterford, Conn.), sophomores Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Mass.), Brittney Kusmierski (Omaha, Neb.) and Kayla McCormack (Hanson, Mass.) , and freshman Noelle Brasier (Simi Valley, Calif.) posted a perfect score of 10.0 to stop Azusa Pacific from taking the entire Pyramid event. The Bobcats would head into halftime with only 1.1 points separating them from the leading Cougars 97.55-96.45.
In the final stanza, the Bobcats continued to trail on the tails of Azusa Pacific throughout the remainder of the match. In the Toss event Quinnipiac fell 29.60-29.05. In heat three, Bobcats, Rochester, McCormack, Kusmierski and Brooke Artz (Whitman, Mass.) along with freshman Kelsey Rule (Kendall Park, N.J.), posted a season high score of 9.95 in the open toss heat. From there Quinnipiac was unable to recover. The Bobcats fell to the Cougars in the remaining events, Tumble (58.575-56.150) and Team (99.0-96.49) events.
The Bobcats concluded their 2014 season at 6-3 in the NCATA. This weekend, the NCATA recognized three Bobcats for their achievement on the mats this season. Sophomores Brooke Artz and Kayla McCormack along with freshman Kelsey Rule were named to the All-American Team. Rule also picked up the NCATA Freshman of the Year Award.
