Hamden, Conn.- The Quinnipiac acrobatics and tumbling team defeated Gannon University, 279.575-260.895, in its 2014 season opener Saturday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac solidified their first win of the season in front of a record crowd of 1,107. The Bobcats, fresh off of being 2013 runners-up in the NCATA National tournament now stand at 1-0 on the season, while Gannon drops to 0-1.
It was an afternoon of firsts for Quinnipiac as they opened the 2014 season meeting the Golden Knight of Gannon University for the first time in program history. The Bobcats were able to sweep all events in the meet for their first time ever in program history against any NCATA program.
Quinnipiac opened the afternoon strong as they easily took the first three events of the first half. Quinnipiac whom led from the start, jumped ahead in Compulsory, 38.65-34.25. The Bobcats posted solid scores across the board in the compulsory pyramid (9.95) and compulsory toss (9.95) heats. Quinnipiac would continue building on their score in the event posting, 28.5-26.94, over Gannon. In the Pyramid event, the Bobcats were only able to capture two of its three heats, falling to the Golden Knights in the twisting pyramid heat of the event, 9.65 - 9.04, for Gannon's only heat win of the afternoon. Despite the minor setback, Quinnipiac stood unfazed as they held a commanding, 95.39-89.29, advantage going into the second half.
In the final proceedings, the Bobcats continued to gain momentum marking high scores throughout the Toss (28.05-26.6), Tumble (56.48-49.58) and Team (106.05-104.73) events. Junior Jenna Quenneville (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) sparked the Bobcats performance in the Aerial Tumble Sequence posting a high scoring 9.8 out of 10 score for Quinnipiac. Next, senior Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Mass.) followed tallying a 9.85 out of 10 in the Open Tumble heat. For the final event, Team, the Bobcats posted an team high of 106.05 to solidify their first win at home this season.
Quinnipiac will return to the mats Sunday, February 23 when they host Baylor University at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. at 12 pm. Prior to the start of the meet, Quinnipiac Athletics will also take a moment to recognize its six graduating seniors.
