COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Quinnipiac acrobatics & tumbling team exceeded expectations by winning two of six total events, which included earning a perfect score of 27.45 in the pyramid portion, in its first meet of the season against Maryland on Saturday night. While the Bobcats were defeated by the slimmest of margins, with an overall final score of 267.031 - 265.208, the team gave preseason coaches' poll No. 1 Maryland all it could handle in its impressive season debut.
The greatest upset of the night came during the final event, the team routine, in which Quinnipiac outscored Maryland, 94.676 - 91.558. The Bobcats had never previously defeated the Terps in the team routine, and proved that they are ready to compete at this high level of competition.
"In the preseason coaches' poll we were selected sixth out of six teams, so coming into this meet we were the obvious underdogs," said Head Coach Mary Ann Powers. "The way our team performed today, winning the team routine portion and scoring a perfect score during the pyramid section, truly impressed myself and the rest of the coaching staff. Now we can really move towards some bigger things, looking ahead to both tomorrow and the rest of the season."
Maryland began the night with a 39.79 - 39.51 victory in the compulsories. The Bobcats fell again in the following stunt event portion, 26.272 - 27.393.
Quinnipiac then executed a perfect score of 27.45 to earn the victory in the pyramid portion. Maryland received a score of 26.450.
The Bobcats fell by just over one point in the basket toss event, 27.05 - 28.15, and held its own in the tumbling event with a score of 50.25, compared to Maryland's 53.69.
Quinnipiac saved the best for last, winning arguably the most important event of the meet, the team routine. This last event encompasses all members of the team, as the Bobcats displayed how the culmination of their individual talents could account for such a great team score.
