QU's High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center To Host USA Sled Hockey Games On Sept. 8-9
HAMDEN, CT- Quinnipiac University and the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center will be hosting two exhibition games on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. between the USA Women and Connecticut Wolf Pack sled hockey teams. The games will be free to the public.
Sled hockey was invented in Stockholm, Sweden in the 1960's. The USA Women’s Sled Hockey Team will feature Quinnipiac alumna Karen Smith ’74 in goal.
"As a Quinnipiac alumna, I am excited to bring our national team to the beautiful TD Bank Sports Center and Quinnipiac campus,” Smith said. “We are hoping to help grow the sport of sled hockey by showing the Quinnipiac community what an exciting sport it can be”.
Sled hockey follows most of the typical ice hockey rules with the exception of some of the equipment. Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades. There are two sticks for each player, instead of one, fastened with metal picks on the butt end for players to propel themselves. Goalies wear the same equipment as ice hockey goalies, with the exception to metal picks sewn into the backside of their gloves to allow them to maneuver.
Sled hockey provides an opportunity for people with a variety of disabilities. There are opportunities available in local areas ranging from the recreation level to the National Sled Team that plays in the Paralympics. Sled hockey is rapidly growing in the United States, partly because of the number of veterans returning from the war with amputations and other disabilities. The women’s team plays a full check game, same as the men’s team, so sleds are flying! Come check out the excitement of sled hockey!
