QU Field Hockey Adds Gemma Cirera Guttierez, First Student-Athlete From Spain In Program History

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey head coach Becca Main has announced the addition of Gemma Cirera Guttierez for the 2014 season. Guttierez, a native of Terrassa, Barcelona, is the first student-athlete in program history to join the Bobcats from Spain.

"Gemma resides in an area full of high-level hockey with many teammates competing at a high level throughout the United States," Main commented. "Gemma is one of the most naturally talented, courageous and impressive defenders to come to Quinnipiac University."

A defender, Guttierez will bring extensive international experience to the Bobcats line-up. As a member of her country's U16 National Team in 2009-10, Guttierez helped Spain to a runner-up finish in the National Championship. In 2010-11, Guttierez guided her team to the Spanish National Championship and the Catalonia State Championship.

"Gemma has a long-reach style in her play and will be excellent in outletting transition and field transfers," Main said. "She is a defensive genius and we think her fun-loving attitude coupled with her fiery play in the backfield to keep the ball out of our net will bode well for our team as we seek to repeat as MAAC champions."

In 2011-12, Guttierez once-again helped her team to the Spanish National Championship and the Catalonia State Championship as a member of the U18 team. In 2012-13, she helped the team to a Spanish National Championship runner-up   finish and the runner-up in the Catalonia State Championship. Guttierez is currently competing in the Spanish Honor Division.

"We expect her knowledge of the game, along with her speed and vision, will be crucial to her transition to Bobcat hockey. We feel honored to add her to our impressive class of incoming freshman and we are pleased to call her a Bobcat," Main said.

Quinnipiac won the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Field Hockey Regular-Season and Tournament Championships in the first season that the conference sponsored the sport. In doing so, the Bobcats became the first Quinnipiac program to win a regular-season title and a championship title in the University's first season as members of the MAAC.

Guttierez will join a freshman class that includes: Sara Cook (Fairport, N.Y.), Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Conn.), Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa), Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, N.J.), Rachel Hamm (Perkiomen, Pa.), Kiera Godusky (Allentown, Pa.), Payton Mickey (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Felicia Costanzo (Lakeland, N.Y.).
