HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team is set to open play in the 2013 NCAA Division I Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Nation's Capital. The Bobcats drew American University (14-5, 6-0 Patriot League) in one of the Play-In games, which will take place on Jacobs Field at 1 p.m. The winner of the game will take on top-seeded Maryland in College Park.
The tournament appearance is Quinnipiac's fourth since joining the NCAA's top tier. The Bobcats made their first appearance back in 1999 when they defeated Monmouth, 1-0, on a goal from Catie Canetti. Two years later, Quinnipiac made its second appearance and endured an opening clash with Cal Berkeley; and then made it two NCAA appearances in a span of three years with a trip to College Park, Md. to face American. The Bobcats are still looking for their first NCAA Tournament win.
Quinnipiac won the MAAC Championship with a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday. Amanda Danziger was the hero in the triumph, connecting on a penalty stroke in the 13th minute of action. Megan Conaboy made her fourth consecutive shutout and extended her Quinnipiac single season record for wins in a season to 14.
The Patriot League's top-seed American University field hockey team won its ninth Patriot League Championship and first since 2010 on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field, posting a 3-0 shutout of No. 2 Boston U. Following the game, Ashley Dalisera, Rebecca Treharne and Grace Wilson were named to the All-Tournament Team with Shelly Montgomery being named the Tournament MVP.
The selection show was held on Sunday Nov. 10 at 10 PM on NCAA.com. The entire field hockey team met in the Athletics and Recreation Center's Conference Room and enjoyed some ice cream while watching the show online.
