Kristin Engelke (Medford, N.J.) scored Quinnipiac's lone goal in a 5-1 loss to nationally-ranked No. 5 Syracuse at the Asics Invitational hosted by Hofstra University in Hempstead. N.Y.
Quinnipiac opens the year at 0-1 while the Orange start the year at 1-0. Christa Romano (Madison, N.J.) and Amanda Danziger (Smithtown, N.Y.) were credited with assists on the play. The goal was Engelke's 13th of her career, moving her into a tie for 17th all-time at Quinnipiac.
Syracuse opened the game with a goal three minutes into the play by Emma Russell, followed by a marker from Lauren Brooks in the 17th minute. Leonie Geyer set-up both plays before Alyssa Manley scored in the 22nd minute. Manley scored again midway through the second half and then assisted on Geyer's goal with less than two minutes to play.
With time expiring, senior captain Jennalise Taylor (Yardley, Pa.) drew a corner for the Bobcats. Romano sent the ball to Danziger at the top of the circle who made a nice stick play, leaving Engelke with a blast through traffic. The ball found a foot of a player in front of Orange keeper Jess Jecko and found the net.
Syracuse outshot the Bobcats, 23-6, for the game, including a 19-2 ledger in the first frame. Quinnipiac closed the gap in the second half, putting four shots on goal down the stretch. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pa.) stopped 18 shots in goal.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 when it takes on LaSalle University in the Consolation Game of the Asics Invitational at 11:30 a.m.
