Field Hockey Falls to Monmouth, 3-0, In NEC Action
HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) recorded a game-high nine saves on Friday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University field hockey team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to Monmouth University at the QU Field Hockey Turf Field on Mount Carmel Campus.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in league competition, while the visiting Hawks improve to 3-11, 1-1 in the NEC.
In addition to its four-game winning streak, Quinnipiac also entered the contest with another streak at hand as well. The Bobcats have scored the game's first goal in their last four outings, a streak dating back to their 3-2 win against American on Sunday, September 23. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the stretch came to an end when Monmouth opening the scoring summary in the 14th minute. Alex Carroll found the back of the cage on a blast from 15-yards out for her second goal of the season. Trish O'Dwyer was credited with the assist on the play, leaving a 1-0 advantage for the away team.
Monmouth continued to press forward and controlled much of the possession through the remainder of the first half. The Hawks controlled a 13-2 advantage in shots, and a 5-1 edge in penalty corners. Lewis was up for the challenge, setting a season-high with eight saves in the opening stanza to preserve the 1-0 deficit.
After the break, Quinnipiac's offense came to life early on and nearly produced the equalizer just two minute into the second half. A nice build up from the backfield resulted in a counterattack for the Bobcats, where senior Kristin Engelke (Medford, N.J.) nearly tied the game up at one-apiece. However, Engelke's shot from the left side was turned away by Hawks' goalkeeper Teresa Mathews and Monmouth went the other way.
After the quick spurt however, momentum went back in favor of the Hawks who generated another goal in the 45th minute, and then an insurance goal in the 64th minute to solidify a final score of 3-0. Mathews made one save in the triumph and collected her third win of the season.
The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, October 14 with another NEC match-up against Rider. Prior to the 12 p.m. tilt, Quinnipiac will honor its senior-class members with a brief ceremony at the QU Field Hockey Turf Field.
