New York State of Mind
The Quinnipiac field hockey team will travel to New York, N.Y. to
take on Columbia University in a non-conference tilt slated for a
6:30 p.m. start. Quinnipiac is coming off a pair of dramatic
victories - 3-2 against Lehigh and 4-3 against Harvard - last week
and currently stand at 5-2 on the season. Colgate hosts the Bobcats
with a record of 2-3 on the season.
All-Time Against Columbia
The Bobcats and the Lions have met six times over the last nine
years, with Columbia winning four of those meetings. Quinnipiac won
the first meeting between the two teams, at Columbia, 4-0 on Oct.
19, 2003. The next three match-ups went to overtime, with Columbia
taking the first two, before the Bobcats defeated the Lions 2-1 in
a shoot-out at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf
Complex in Hamden, Conn. on Sept. 2, 2007. Columbia has won the
last two meetings.
Scouting The Lions
Columbia is currently 2-3 on the season after a season-opening 5-3
loss to Drexel on Sept. 1, before bouncing back to defeate La
Salle, 4-2. After back-to-back road losses to Monmouth, 4-0, and
Hofstra, 4-2, Columbia defeated Brown, 3-1, in its home opener on
Sept. 16. Gabby Kozlowski leads Columbia with four goals, while
Leti Freaney has tallied two goals and an assist on the season. In
goal, Christi O'Hara ranks eighth among all Division I goalies
with 8.60 saves per game. Kozlowski is tied for 33rd in the
nation with her 0.80 goals-per-game average.
NEC Player of the Week
Senior Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) was named the Northeast
Conference Player of the Week after figuring into five of
Quinnipiac's seven goals in a pair of wins against Lehigh and
Harvard. Cunniff had her first career hat trick, scoring all three
goals in the Bobcats win against Lehigh, including the game-winner
off a corner play with no time on the clock. Cunniff also scored
one goal and assisted Megan McCreedy on her first goal of the
season in Quinnipiac win against Harvard.
Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches
Poll
Quinnipiac, off to its best start in the program's Division I
history, received votes for the first time this season in the 2011
Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
Last Week Was A Good Week
Quinnipiac won both of its games last week, edging both Patriot
League member Lehigh and Ivy League foe Harvard on the QU Field
Hockey Turf. The Bobcats, who are 4-0 at home, have won five
of the first seven games of the 2011 season. Their only
setbacks came on the road against nationally-ranked opponents
– No. 6 Penn State and No. 14 Boston College.
Out Of Africa
Megan McCreedy (White River, South Africa) scored her first
goal of the season in the Bobcats’ 4-3 thriller against
Harvard on Sunday, and also picked up her team-leading sixth assist
of the year. With 19 career assists, McCreedy is fourth all-time at
Quinnipiac.
Watching The Clock
Amanda Danziger’s first goal of the season came with 5.2
seconds remaining in regulation and broke a 3-3 tie to give the
Bobcats a one-goal win over against Harvard on Sunday.
No Place Like Home
Quinnipiac is currently 4-0 at home this season, and holds a
five-game win streak at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse
Turf Complex, dating back to its 5-1 win against Siena on Oct. 31,
2010. Quinnipiac previously went undefeated at home during the
2001, 2002 and 2003 seasons, spanning 16 games without a loss on
their home field.
