Quinnipiac freshman Danielle Allan's (Riverdale, N.J.) hat trick led the Bobcats to a 5-2 win against Sacred Heart to clinch the third seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament. The Bobcats finish the regular season at 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the NEC while Sacred Heart drops to 6-12 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Quinnipiac's 11 wins are the second most in program history.
Allan's hat trick is the third for Quinnipiac this season, as Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) and Jess Rusin (Garwood, N.J.) also scored three times in a game earlier this season. The first-year Bobcats' eight goals are the second most by a Quinnipiac freshman in the program's Division I history, behind Danielle Avenoso's 10 goals in 2002. Allan also becomes the first freshman in program history to score in three straight games.
Cunniff scored her 14th goal of the season while Megan McCreedy (White River, South Africa) scored her third of the year. McCreedy also assisted on Allan's final goal to give her 13 for the season and 26 for her career. Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped eight of 10 shots on goal by Sacred Heart in the win as she improves to 11-7 on the season. Amanda Danziger (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Lauren Zimniski (Dallas, Pa.) had assists in the game.
Allan's first goal of the game, at the 3:11 mark, put Quinnipiac out in front early before Cunniff's goal gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Sacred Heart answered when Sarah Bergman, who Allan shared this latest NEC Rookie of the Week honor with, cut the Bobcats lead in half.
Coming out of halftime, Quinnipiac rattled two more goals, as McCreedy and Allan both found the back of the cage to give Quinnipiac a 4-1 lead. After Lindsay Kasten scored on a pass from Leah Salindong, Allan scored in the 67th minute to give the Bobcats a three-goal lead with her third marker of the game.
Quinnipiac, with the third seed in the NEC Tournament, will face No. 2 Monmouth on Friday, Nov. 4. Live video will be available at www.NortheastConference.tv for each game of the conference tournament.
