Quinnipiac senior Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) scored twice, but the Bobcats lost to Monmouth, 3-2, in a battle of the unbeatens in West Long Branch, N.J. With the loss, Quinnipiac goes to 2-1 in NEC play and 8-6 overall while Monmouth remains undefeated in conference play at 3-0.
Monmouth's Patricia Dwyer staked the Hawks to a 2-0 lead with her eighth and ninth goals of the season. Her first goal came just 33 seconds into regulation on a pass by Ashley McPeek that Dwyer redirected pass Quinnipiac goalkeeper Nicole East Amherst, N.Y. Her second goal came in the 11th minute on a loose ball in front of the net.
Notarianni answered in the 15th minute when she picked up a ball in front of the Monmouth cage and beat Teresa Mathews to trim the Hawks' lead in half. Her second goal, and seventh of the season, came late in the first half on a shot over Mathews to tie the game. Quinnipiac had two opportunites with no time on the clock in the first half. On their first corner attempt, Monmouth made a defensive save while the second went wide of caqe.
Both teams played even through the second half before Monmouth's leading scorer Michelle Pieczynski scored her team-leading 16th goal of the season.Tara Brown put a shot on goal that Pieczynski redirected to give Monmouth the lead.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. to take on undefeated Rider at 12 p.m.
