Jess Rusin Scores Twice To Lead Field Hockey To 4-2 NEC Win Against Saint Francis (Pa.)
HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore Jess Rusin (Garwood, N.J.) scored twice to lead the Quinnipiac field hockey team to a 4-2 Northeast Conference win against Saint Francis (Pa.). With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 8-5 overall and remain undefeated in NEC play at 2-0. Saint Francis drops to 3-11 on the season and 1-1 in NEC play.
Rusin becomes the first Quinnipiac player to reach the 10-goal mark in a season since 2006. Rusin also leads the team in multiple-goal games with three on the season. For the game, seven different players tallied points in the Bobcats' conference victory. Amanda Danziger (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Megan McCreedy (White River, South Africa) both scored their second goals of the season, while Danielle Allan (Riverdale, N.J.), Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) and Brittany Gentile (Derry, N.H.) all had assists. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) had seven saves in the game.
Rusin and Cunniff, both with 21 points through Quinnipiac's first 13 games, give the Bobcats their first dual 20-point scorers since 2002, when Chelsea Osbrey and Danielle Avenoso completed the feat. For just the second time in Quinnipiac's Division I history, Rusin, Cunniff and Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) give the Bobcats' three 15-point scorers in back-to-back years.
Rusin's ninth goal of the season came just 6:39 into the game when she popped in a shot off a rebound from a corner. In the 16th minute, Allan unleashed a blast on goal that Danziger tipped in before McCreedy scored her second goal of the season on a pass from Cunniff on a corner. Rusin's second goal of the game, and 10th of the year, came on a brilliant pass from Gentile along the goal line to the front of the cage where Rusin picked the ball up and dribbled around the keeper before depositing a shot into the back of the net.
The Red Flash's Carissa Makea had a goal and an assist, as she set up Autumn Pellman with Saint Francis' second goal of the game late in the second half. Kellie Mason was also credited with an assist.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 14 when it travels to West Long Branch, N.J. to take on Monmouth in a Northeast Conference match-up set for a 4 p.m. start. The Bobcats will then head face Rider on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 12 p.m.
