Field Hockey Falls To No. 6 Penn State, 6-1
The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to nationally-ranked No. 6 Penn State, 6-1, in a non-conference match-up in University Park, Pa. With the loss, Quinnipiac moves to 3-2 on the season while Penn State improves to 3-3.
"We made crucial mistakes with our defensive corner unit to allow four goals to be scored. It's an adjustment we'll need to make for next week and as we move forward this season," head coach Becca Main Kohli said. "We are very pleased with the play of Nicole Lewis in net and our team stuck to our midfield game plan with the help of Megan McCreedy and Maria Malonoski. We're going to look to make the appropriate adjustments to the attack side of the ball when we play lehigh on Wednesday."
Kim Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season in the 23rd minute with an assist going to Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.). On a corner, Cunniff took a pass from Notarianni and unleashed a blast from the top of the circle that beat Penn State's Ayla Halus to put Quinnipiac on the board.
Penn State scored four straight goals to open the game, three coming from Kelsey Amy. Two of Kelsey's goals came off of corners with assists credited to Whitney Reddig. Kelsey scored her fourth goal of the half with time expired on a corner, while Ashtin Klinger also scored to send Penn State into halftime with a 5-1 lead.
Quinnipiac goalkeeper Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in the first half, and shut down the Penn State offense in the second, re-directing all five shots she saw on goal.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they host Lehigh at 3 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex on the Mt. Carmel Campus of Quinnipiac University.
