LORETTO, Pa. - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team shutout Saint Francis (Pa.), 2-0, in a Northeast Conference game played in Loretto, Pa. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast Conference while Saint Francis (Pa.) drops to 3-12 overall and 1-3 in NEC play.
"We had a really strong showing today because of a tremendous work ethic," head coach Becca Kohli said. "We had smart games from Kimmy Cunniff, Katie Notarianni and Nicole Lewis and I am confident in our ability to adapt to various surfaces and also play fierce and fast. We gave proper attention to a conference game like they all should be played."
MacKenzie Liptak (Schuylerville, N.Y.) and Katie Van Nostrand (Derry, N.H.) both scored to lead the Bobcats. Goalkeeper Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped both Red Flash shots on goal for her first career shutout and the Bobcats first this season.
Liptak put the Bobcats on the board 47:21 into the game when she handled the ball along the goalline and flipped it over Saint Francis goalie Katelyn Vitali to the opposite post for her second goal of the season. Van Nostrand scored off a corner in the 64th minute for her third of the year.
"Our first shutout of the year feels awesome," junior midfielder Lauren Zimniski said. "Every person on this team contributed today and it showed in a great win. Our team has a never-give-up mindset. If we can keep that through our remaining games, I have no doubt we will be playing for the NEC Championship."
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 24 when they take on Robert Morris at 12 p.m. at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa.
