HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Monmouth, 2-0, in a Northeast Conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the NEC while Monmouth improves to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Junior Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped six of Monmouth's eight shots on goal, holding the NEC's second-highest scoring offense to two goals while turning away six scoring opportunities over the course of the game. Monmouth's Melissa Katz stopped all three Quinnipiac shots on goal.
Melissa Murphy put Monmouth on the board with her first goal of the year, coming off a corner just 4:35 into the game, with assists going to Ashley McPeek and Meredith Violi. From there, Lewis was rock-solid in goal for the remainder of the half and much of the second frame.
It was until Monmouth had a three-on-two situation deep in the Bobcats' defensive zone with under a minute to play that the Hawks struck again. Morganne Firestone dribbled the ball through the top of the circle and dumped a pas off to Michelle Pieczynski who scored her eighth goal of the year.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22 when they travel to Loretto, Pa. to take on Saint Francis (Pa.) University in a Northeast Conference match-up set for a 3 p.m. start.
