Cunniff Scores Twice To Lead Field Hockey To 3-1 Win Against Lafayette

HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Quinnipiac University field hockey team to a 3-1 win against Lafayette at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Bobcats as they improve to 3-6 on the season. Lafayette drops to 2-5 with the loss.

Cunniff's two goals tie her with classmate Kaitlyn Notariani (Clarks Summit, Pa.) for the team lead. She has has now scored in two straight games, after registering the Bobcats' only goal against Maine on Friday. Both of the junior's goals came off penalty corners as the Bobcats' special teams were 2-for-5 for the day. Sophomore Kristen Engelke (Medford, N.J.) added her second goal of the season with less than two minutes to play.

Lauren Zimniski (Dallas, Pa.) and senior captain Tina Watkins (Sweet Valley, Pa.) both picked up a pair of assists, with Watkins serving as the push-out and Zimniski serving as the stick-stop on the corners. MacKenzie Liptak (Schuylerville, N.Y.) also had an assists. In goal, Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped five of Lafayette's six shots on goal for the afternoon.

Lafayette's Maria Machalick put the Leopards out in front with her second goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder took a shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the cage after heading through traffic in front of Lewis. Lafayette headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Cunniff scored her first goal of the game at the 45:41 mark when the Bobcats were awarded a corner. Zimniski stopped the ball and sent it to her left where Cunniff blasted a shot past Lafayette's Kelsey Andersen to tie the game. Her second goal came at the 57:42 mark, also off a corner, when she unleashed another hard shot from the top of the circle.

Engelke's second goal of the year came at the 68:26 mark. Liptak handled the ball from the corner in front of the Bobcats' bench and sent it into the circle. After bouncing around, the ball tipped off Andersen's left pad and found Engelke's stick. The sophomore forward deposited the ball into the cage to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead.

Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5 when it hosts Brown University at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. at 4 p.m. The Bobcats will be sponsoring a fund raiser that day to support Breast Cancer Awareness through the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Bobcat fans are invited to wear pink that day in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, while parents of both teams will be holding a bake sale at the field to raise funds. The Bobcats will open Northeast Conference play on Sunday, Oct. 10 when it travels to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at 12 p.m. They will then host Rider on Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m. and Monmouth on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
