The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to the University of Maine, 6-1, in a non-conference game played in Orono, Me. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 2-6 for the year while Maine improves to 7-2. Junior Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season in the loss.
"We had two very different teams show up today and unfortunately, I would have liked the second team to start the game," head coach Becca Kohli said. "We have not had 11 players play together for enough minutes all season. As a coaching staff, we need to find the right fit and game plan for our surge forward into NEC play. I was pleased with some player's ability to be creative in a losing game. I think we're getting to the point where we're making progress and improving."
Cunniff's goal was an answer to five straight goals scored by the Black Bears. Jocelyn Mitchell scored 19 seconds into the game, and then twice more in the next 14 minutes to push Maine out in front, 3-0. Stephanie Gardiner scored two more goals to give Maine a five-goal cushion before Cunniff broke up Maine's shutout bid when she scored for the second time this season. Courtney Veinotte scored Maine's sixth goal.
In the cage, Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped six of Maine's eight shots on goal over the final 49 minutes of play.
