LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost its 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season finale, 4-1, at Siena in Loudonville, N.Y. With the loss, Quinnipiac concludes the regular season at 17-29 overall and 12-10 in the MAAC while Siena goes to 22-30 overall and 17-7 in conference play.
The Bobcats squandered a 4-for-4 day from sophomore Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, N.Y.). Pescitelli had a special day, coming up a home run short of the cycle as he also collected his program-record sixth triple of the year as well as a double and two singles. Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) scored Quinnipiac's lone run in a 1-for-4 day while Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove Iannotti in. Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn.) started the game and spun a three-hit scoreless first inning before being replaced by Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Mass.). Shileikis gave up three runs to take his first conference loss of the year.
For Siena, Mike Allen was 3-for-5 while Andres Ortiz and Dan Swain both collected two hits and drove in one run apiece. Bryan Goossens picked up the win to improve to 3-4 on the year after scattering six runs over seven innings and allowing just one run.
Siena plated three runs in the third inning as Ortiz and Swain both drove in runs in the inning while the Saints Vincent Cintro scored on a wild pitch. Matt Lorenzetti (Marlboro, N.J.) came on in relief and spun 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
In the fourth inning, Iannotti singled to lead off the inning before moving to third on Pescitelli's one-out single. Iannotti scored on a sacrifice fly by Nelson to make the score 3-1. Siena chipped in another run in its final at-bat.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesay, May 21 in the first game of the 2014 MAAC Baseball Championship Tournament at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J. The Bobcats' postseason berth is its first since the 2007 season.
