QU Baseball Splits MAAC Doubleheader At Siena; Win First Game, 10-3, Before Dropping Nightcap, 5-2
The Quinnipiac University baseball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Siena, winning the first game, 10-3, before dropping the second game, 5-2. Quinnipiac goes to 17-28 overall and 12-9 in the MAAC while Siena moves to 21-30 overall and 16-7 in conference play.
In the first game, Freshman Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) was 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs score while also stealing two bases. Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) was 3-for-6 with two RBI while Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) collected two hits to extend his team-, season-best hitting-streak to nine games. Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, N.J.) improved to 2-4 after a solid relief appearance.
Guglietti extended his streak to 10 games in the second game with a 1-for-3 game, while also driving in one of Quinnipiac's two runs. Batten drove in the other run in the loss, while freshman Matthe Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.) put together a 2-for-3 day. Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss in his first conference start of the year to drop to 1-2 after giving up five runs - four earned - over 5 2/3.

Quinnipiac started the scoring in the top of the first inning when Batten hit a double to right and then later scored on a RBI single by Guglietti.
Quinnipiac opened things up in the second inning when a string of mistakes by Siena starter Matt Gage saw the Bobcats jump out to a 6-0 lead. Blumenthal's one-out single, followed by a walk by Nic Civale (East Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) being hit by a pitch, loaded the bases with one out in the inning.
Two straight singles, followed by two straight walks, got Siena on the board in the fifth inning as Allen scored on the bases loaded walk to Fay. The Saints added a second run when Justin Esquerra scored on a sacrifice fly by Ortiz.
The Bobcats tacked on two more runs when Iannotti singled to drive in Batten in the sixth, and Blumenthal scored on an error in the seventh.
Siena cut into the lead with a run in the eighth but Batten answered with a two-RBI single in the ninth, scoring Blumenthal and Junior Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) to extend the lead to 10-3.
Senior Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out a batter, without surrending a hit.
Game 2 Recap
Siena used small ball to open the scoring in the first inning after a lead-off single by Vincent Citro. He advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third, before being driven in by John Rooney.
The Saints broke things open with three runs in the third inning, as Citro started things off with another lead-off single. After advancing to second on a hit batter, Citrp scored on a single by Esquerra to put Siena ahead 2-0. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Allen scored on a Rooney sacrifice fly and Esquerra scored on a RBI single by Fay to give the Saints a 4-0 lead through three innings.
Guglietti doubled to right field in the fourth inning to drive in Iannotti and put Quinnipiac on the board, 4-1. Citro created his own offense for Siena, reaching on catcher's interference, stealing second and advancing to third on an error, before scoring on a RBI single by Allen.
The Bobcats added another run in the fifth inning when Civale scored on a ground out by Batten, but would ultimately fall to the Saints by a 5-2 final.
Ed Lewicki picked up his fourth win of the season for Siena, allowing just two runs on three hits in four innings pitched. Matt Quintana earned a three inning save, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out two.
Both teams return to action on Friday, May 16 at 12 Noon in Loudonville, N.Y. for the final game of the regular season.
