Bobcats Complete Three-Game Sweep As Brandon Shileikis One-Hits Iona In 6-0 Win

New Rochelle, N.Y.- The Quinnipiac baseball team defeated Iona, 6-0,to complete a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series sweep, while running its winning streak to six games. The Bobcats are now 10-3 in their last 13 games and improve to 12-16 overall and 7-3 in MAAC play. Iona falls to 6-19 on the season and 3-6 in MAAC play.

Freshman Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Mass) was dominant on the mound for the Bobcats tossing a complete-game shutout allowing only one hit. Iona's lone hit came on a ground ball to third that skipped under the glove of a Bobcats' infielder. Shileikis faced only two batters over the minimum in picking up his first career win. For the series, Iona mustered one run for the weekend, coming in the second game of an extra-inning win by the Bobcats.

The Quinnipiac offense balanced, plating six runs on twelve hits. Four different players had at least two hits, highlighted by the hot-hitting junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn) who cashed in with a 3-for-5 day including two runs scored and two RBI to increase his team lead to 21 for the year. Sophomores Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, N.Y.), and Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn) all collected two hits on the day. Palladino was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base while Pescitelli was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Nelson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. 

In the top of the third, Palladino reached base with a one-out single before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Guglietti then came up with two outs and runners on first and second. His groundball to second was mishandled, allowing Palladino to score from second and give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Palladino and make it 2-0. Guglietti followed with a RBI single to score freshman Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) before Pescitelli's base hit brought Guglietti around to give Quinnipiac a four-run lead.

In the top of the seventh, Iannotti singled with one out before stealing second and third. Guglietti delivered again with a single up the middle to score Ianotti before Nelson lined a single to left field to score Guglietti and give Quinnipiac a 6-0 lead.  

Quinnipiac will look to extend their winning streak to seven games as they host Hartford on Tuesday April 15th at 3:00 PM at the QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.
