Baseball Drops Series-Opener to Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It was a difficult day on the diamond for the Quinnipiac University baseball team, as the Bobcats dropped a 15-0 decision to Navy at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis.

Quinnipiac (1-10) fell behind in the bottom of the second inning when the Midshipmen turned a lead-off double into a three-spot on the scoreboard. QU had its best looks against Navy's Anthony Parenti in the top of the third when the Bobcats had two singles and a walk in the frame. Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single, followed by a Brian Ruditys' (Boothwyn, Pa.) base-knock and a walk to Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, N.Y.). However, Nelson's position was erased with a pick-off, and Quinnipiac mixed in a fly-out and a fielders' choice to end the threat.

After that, Parenti was in dominant form once again as he dropped his 0.65 ERA lower to 0.50 on the season with eight shutout innings of four-hit, eight-strikeout ball versus the Bobcats. Freshman Kyle Condry threw a scoreless ninth to give Navy its third shutout of the season.

Quinnipiac mustered a total of four hits off Parenti – one each from Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.), Nic Civale (East Windsor, Conn.), Nelson and Ruditys.

On the mound, Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) was credited with the loss for the Bobcats. He went six innings, allowed five runs on 10 hits while striking out two. Matt DeRosa (Monroe, Conn.) and Ryan Verdi (Wallingford, Conn.) closed out the final two innings for Quinnipiac.

Navy generated 15 runs on 17 hits in the offensive outburst. Brandon Beans had five RBI on a 2-for-4 day from the dish. Lead-off man Robert Currie went 4-fo-5 with three runs and three RBI. Batters' 1-3 went 9-for-15 with 10 RBI and four runs scored.

Quinnipiac and Navy meet again tomorrow, Saturday, March 15, 2014, with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
